Project Overview
Yu Residence is the interior transformation of an existing two-storey bungalow in a gated residential precinct at La Promenade, on the outskirts of Kuching. IDC Architects was invited to reimagine the interiors in response to the homeowners’ deep appreciation for local arts and craftsmanship — resulting in a home that feels both rooted and refined.
Design Approach
We wanted the interiors to feel open and restful, while still carrying the warmth of local identity. Natural materials, light timber tones, and soft lighting shape a comfortable backdrop. From layout to detailing, everything was designed to feel seamless, with just the right balance between simplicity and personality.
Cultural Layering
Inspired by the owners’ appreciation for Sarawakian craft, we introduced custom elements throughout the home. One of the key features is a set of screens that incorporate traditional wooden ‘gasing’ — supported by slender timber and steel rods. These small gestures bring a sense of local character to the space, without overwhelming it.
