Sarawak State Legislative Assembly: Media Room

Location
Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, Kuching, Malaysia

The Media Room forms one of the three major interior spaces appointed to IDCA for redesign within the DUNS complex. As the primary venue for press conferences and televised statements by dignitaries, the room demanded a strong visual identity rooted in Sarawak’s cultural heritage while maintaining the technical precision required for broadcast environments.

The design features a custom textile backdrop developed with Tanoti Crafts, weaving together motifs from Dayak tradition, Malay songket, and Chinese textile patterns. A timber lattice referencing Sarawak’s basket-weaving techniques overlays the tapestry, balancing cultural depth with contemporary expression. A sculptural ceiling evokes the communal gathering spaces beneath large ancestral trees, while the carpet’s layered leaf-like patterns represent the forest floor -  grounding the room in the natural and cultural history of the state. Together, these elements create a dignified and distinct backdrop for Sarawak’s public communications.
